How to use your PenDrive as a RAM

As we know there are two type of storage or memory in your computer - Hard disk and RAM. Hard disks are cheaper to store huge amounts of data, but slower than RAM. RAM is much costlier, but is the fastest to access small pieces of data which is what programs need.

RAM is a volatile storage used for temporarily storing data. Once the power is turned off, the data is lost here. Also it is a short term memory used to recall  and store immediate actions to that needs to be processed.

But these days, many programs take lots of memory during operation, which is a nightmare for low RAM systems. So to keep away from this make your pen drive/USB of large size as RAM, which will permit your system to handle more operations and tasks. It is a very easy process which you can easily do. To know how to do this, follow the steps below :

Method 1:

1. First insert your Pen Drive (minimum 2GB).

2. Format your Pen Drive as NTFS mode.

3. For Windows XP users Right- Click on 'My Computer' and Go to 'Properties'.

  • Now Click on ‘Advanced' tab.
  • Click on the ‘Settings’ under Performance.
  • Now Performance Options appears.
  • Go to ‘Advanced' tab.
  • Click on ‘Change’ option of Virtual memory.
  • Select your Pen Drive.
  • Click on ‘Custom Size’ which is a radio button. It shows the Initial and Maximum size of the Pen Drive.
  • Click on the ‘Set’ button.
  • Click ‘OK’ to complete your setup.

Finally you have to restart your PC and Voila! Your cache memory has increased!

Method 2:

For Windows 7 and 8 users

• Right Click on the Pen Drive icon

• Select ‘Properties’ option

• Go to ‘ReadyBoost’ tab

• Click 'Use this Device'

• Choose maximum space to Reserve System Speed then click on 'OK' and 'Apply'

And now you are set to operate on a faster PC due to the enhanced virtual memory.

Note:
1. Properly eject your Pendrive, direct removal may cause some problems.

2. If you don't want to use your Pendrive as RAM then revert it back to normal or otherwise open your pendrive and delete Readyboost file from your pendrive.
