What is custom ROM?

In today’s world where all people using Android phones. They often heard a word called “Custom ROMs “. So they might think what is custom rom? Who needs it? What does it does? or Is it required or not?. Many Android fans install such custom ROMs — but why?

To clear all your questions this article will explain all the things why it is required or what’s the use of custom rom. This article also explain why you might want one.

The term ROM, which stands for Read Only Memory and really has very little to do with what a custom Android ROM actually is, can be confusing.

There are two types of ROMs : -

  1. Stock Rom

  2. Custom Rom

The "Stock ROM" are the one which comes inbuilt or installed in the Android phones or tablets. These are customized versions of Android done by mobile companies to make their devices unique in looks and features.

While a “custom ROM” refers to a phone’s firmware, based on Google’s Android platform. It comes from a third party. As android is open source, so any developer can edit the code, add features, recompile it, and re-release for a wide variety of devices. Custom ROM is just like a custom Operating System for android phone with some extra features and extra UI. Basically they can build their own operating system images for Android phone and tablets.

The custom ROM is either a uniquely modified OS by developers, such as CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android or a stock version made available for older devices or for new devices before the vendor release date. See CyanogenMod. Custom ROMs are different from acquiring root access.

Flashing the ROM

Flashing a ROM means installing the system image into the device's internal flash memory. Flash memory holds the Android's firmware, the same as most other portable devices with an embedded OS.

So why install a custom ROM?

·         Get The Latest Version of Android(If your device does not get an official release you can get it with a custom ROM)

·         Replace Manufacturer Skin with a Stock Version of Android

·         Eliminate Bloatware

·         Add Additional Features and System Tweaks

·         Remove unused Applications

Installing custom ROMs is legal and it is not harming the phone, unless you do something wrong, but even if you do you can always start from the beginning. Google your device and search for custom ROMs and you'll find a lot of them. Look through their features, decide which one is the best and install it.

A major advantage of Android smartphones is that they can be operated by third-party systems and not only with the original ROM. Custom ROMs replace the pre-installed version of Android on devices.
